Telescope Tripod Extras
Telescope Tripod Extras
What is a good telescope for under $500?
Someone close to me has offered to get me something nice and I have always wanted a telescope.
I have been reading about then and I keep hearing about the wonderful XT8. The only problem with it is the size of the thing. I live in an apartment and I would have to move it in my car every time I wanted to use it. I would like something close the quality I hear about in the XT8 but in a much smaller package. The scope dose not need to come with a tripod or any extras. I can get those on my own as my budget permits. I am uninterested in the constellations. I really just like looking at the planets and star clusters.
Any ideas would be helpful!
I live in Houston. As far as you guys are concerned its 800 square miles of lights and pollution. Should I even bother with a telescope?
All kidding aside, I can see maybe three stars every night in Houston. I can't locate anything.
visit local astronomers and/or a telescope store and have a look. this is a very personal choice, and you need a telescope that's right for you. telescopes are amazing value and you can get a lot of scope for that much money.
you need to do some research: telescopes don't have tripods. they have mounts. the xt8 uses a dobsonian mount, which is excellent for visual observation. once you have done your research you will know why. my biggest scope is an 18" reflector on a dobsonian mount. i use a stepladder to reach the eyepiece when it's pointing high in the sky and carry it around in my van. it's really cool.
you can look at the moon, the planets and brighter star clusters and nebulae from anywhere. save the deep sky stuff for times you can get out to the country. very few people live under really dark skies. i certainly don't.
budget for some star charts so you can find your way around.
