Having a wide variety of SLR camera lenses is a necessity for a professional photographer. However, choosing a second lens for amateur photographers can be daunting. The sheer number of SLR camera lenses available on the market is amazing. Discover the differences in camera lenses and make sure you buy the best camera lens for you.

The most important point to remember about SLR camera lenses is that they are always camera brand specific. For instance, a Nikon camera lens would not be compatible with a Canon camera and vice versa. However, a lot SLR camera lenses are interchangeable between different models of the same brand. For instance, the 18-135mm kit lens that comes with the Nikon D80 will work on the D90.

Whichever camera you own, the lenses available vary considerably in purpose, size and price and can generally be easily placed into one of the following five categories.

Standard

Most SLR cameras that come with a kit lens will feature a standard lens. It's designed to take a wide variety of photographs. Their perspective is similar to what the human eye sees. It often has too narrow a field of view for use with interiors and is not selective enough for longer-range views.

Wide Angle

With a shorter focal length than a standard SLR camera lens, wide angle lenses provide a wider angle image. Offering somewhat of a distortion on the picture's perspective, wide angle camera lenses give the effect that the item which is closest to the camera is a lot bigger than it is, producing a surreal looking photograph. An extreme example of a wide angle lens is a fish-eye lens.

Fish Eye

Often seen as an extension or progression to a wide angle lens, using a fish eye lens can encompass a wider view, but give the photograph a different perspective. Not used particularly widely in general photography, fish eye lenses offer a great and unusual effect to produce some fantastic images.

Telephoto

In essence, a camera with a telephoto lens attached has the ability to bring items that are further away closer to the camera. It works the same way that a telescope or pair or binoculars work. One of the SLR camera lenses that vary in price most, they can cost in excess of $100,000 at the higher end of the market. But amateurs can find them below $1,000. They are especially adept at wildlife and sports photography.

Macro

The opposite of a telephoto lens, a macro SLR lens has the ability to make small things that are close, appear extremely large. Not detracting from the detail in the image, high quality macro lenses are capable of taking a photograph of a one inch sized insect with such detail, that it can be blown up to fit a large poster without losing any of the insect's features.

Crazy for "Cuppa" tea? Nothing can beat a blissful hot cup of tea in a cold, freezing morning to charge you up for the mundane tasks ahead in the day. Tea scores higher than coffee as it contains Tannin and Catechin which prevents cancer and heart diseases whereas coffee contains Caffeine which is not considered very healthy. Tea is a product of the leaves, leaf buds, and inter-nodes of the Camellia Sinensis plant. Most premium quality teas are grown at higher elevations, where mountain mist and dew shield the plants from direct sunlight. Teas are used for a wide range of purposes, with formulations aimed at specific flavors and season. Tea is usually prepared by infusion or decoction. Rejuvenate and refresh yourself by either of these preparations with an infusion of medicinal herbs grown in your own home tea herb garden.

Tea Decoction

Roots or bark of a plant are used for decoction. The ingredients are soaked in cold water for a duration of 20 minutes to 6 hours in a stainless steel or enamel pot. Bring the solution to boil, and then simmer it for 10-40 minutes, depending on how strong you want the decoction. Strain and drink it hot.

Tea Infusion

Dried or fresh herbs are used to prepare infusion. Put the dried herbs in two cups of clean water and steep it for 3 to 5 minutes. Add one teaspoon of dried or fresh cut leaves (triple the quantity if freshly picked from your home tea garden) and/or flowers into pre-heated mug, jar, or teapot. Cover and let it steep for 10 to 30 minutes. Strain and drink it hot. For cold infusion, steep herbs overnight for 4 to 5 hours, then strain, chill and drink.

Tea comes in multitude of varieties. Here is an outline of the world famous varieties of tea and their properties. According to a study, the tea destroys 80 percent of viruses within 20 minutes.

Black Tea

Black Tea is obtained from tea leaves that are withered, rolled, fermented, and then fired. The tone is darker because the leaves are exposed to air and the oxidation leaves a stronger, traditional and enjoyable taste. Black tea tends to preserve its flavor for several years, blends and mixes well with many varieties of herbs to produce a unique aroma and hence is very popular. Add fresh herbs and fruits from your herb garden to spice up the flavor. It is known to prevent clogged arteries and lower blood pressure. Black tea also contains fluoride which is good for your teeth.

Green Tea

Green tea is obtained from tea leaves that are steamed, rolled, and then fired. It undergoes minimal oxidation during processing. When paired with herbs, the flavor tantalizes the taste buds. Green tea has been known to destroy cancer cells and has slimming and cooling effects. It is known to be very healthy and lowers the blood sugar and cholesterol.

White Tea

The White tea is nothing but the tender white buds which are painstakingly hand plucked right before the leaf opens.

The steaming, limited processing and deactivating the oxidation of white tea retains the rich levels in Catechins.Research shows that white tea is the healthiest of all the teas as it contains high content of anti oxidants and lowest caffeine levels. The light delicate flavor may not go well with people who are used to strong decoctions.

White tea is also believed to reduce wrinkles and inhibit growth of cancer cells.

Herbal Tea

This tea is an aromatic healthy blend of herbs, fruits and spices. It is an excellent source of anti-oxidants and vitamins, particularly vitamin C. It tastes great either hot or cold depending on the flavor of the herb used.

Oolong Tea

The delicate Oolong teas are partially oxidized with a fragrant and fruity aroma. They are known for weight loss as they help burn fat in the body. The tea is good for increasing metabolism and digestion. The Oolong tea is a delicacy from China now available across the globe.

Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea is a herbal infusion of a South African red bush and is also famous as red tea. There are green Rooibos teas that are just as delicious as the red ones. The tea is good for complexion and helps control allergies and fight cold.

Mate Tea

Mate Tea is a delicious, flavored tea from a wild shrub from Argentina. It contains a stimulant and works as an appetite suppressant. It is rich in vitamins and minerals.

what is a good telescope?

hey so for christmas i want to get my boyfriend a telescope, and theres one thats 114 mm reflector telescope, it includes tripod with accessory tray and the skyX planetarium software. i know nothing about telescopes so i dont know if this is good enough quality or not.

There are many types of telescopes available for at-home use. For the beginning astronomer, it can be difficult to decide what telescope is the most appropriate choice. Knowing some of the basics about telescopes---how they work, how large certain telescopes are, costs, upkeep, etc.---can help amateur stargazers decide what telescope fits best with their individual budgets and lifestyles.

Choosing the Right Telescope
Both refractor and reflector telescopes can be used at home, and they come in a variety of sizes, makes and models. The determining factors for choosing a telescope are what you expect to get out of the stargazing experience, whether it will be used inside or outside, whether you plan to travel with it, and how much light is in the surrounding area.

Generally, the higher a telescope's aperture (its ability to collect light), the better it will be at viewing distinct features in the night sky. A telescope's aperture is in positive correlation to the size of the objective lens or primary mirror. From a suburban setting, it is possible to see craters on the moon with an aperture of 2 to 3 inches. To see the rings around Saturn, however, a 6- to 9-inch aperture will be necessary. Furthermore, the closer you live to a city or other light area, the more light pollution there will be, and the more difficult it will be to view certain stellar bodies. From an apartment in the middle of San Diego, it may be nearly impossible to view Jupiter without an 8-inch aperture. From the top of a dormant volcano in Hawaii, however, it may be relatively simple to spot different galaxies with a 6-inch aperture. What you plan to view and where you live are major factors in choosing a telescope.

If price is an issue, reflector telescopes are almost necessarily the way to go. Making the lenses for refractor telescopes is an expensive and difficult process; this is reflected (no pun intended) in the price of refractor telescopes. It is often beneficial to look in newspapers and peruse the Internet for used telescopes. Most serious individuals take care of their astronomical equipment, and you can likely get a telescope for half the price of a new one.

Furthermore, size will probably be an issue. A 10-inch reflector telescope in a studio apartment is going to take up a lot of space. If you plan to take the telescope to darker areas such as fields or parks, it will also probably be beneficial to get a smaller, more portable telescope. Refractor telescopes, because of their design, are often a bit smaller and easier to transport. If this telescope will reside in a garage or attic until Friday night when it is transported a short distance to the driveway or backyard, a larger reflector telescope might be more beneficial.

These are all issues worth considering before purchasing a telescope, and they will be different for every individual. Consider your location, your budget, and what you expect to get out of your telescope, as all of these will ultimately impact the enjoyment that you derive from your stargazing experience.

For the advanced amateur photographer, there are many choices and decisions to make concerning picture quality. First, there is your budget to consider. Then you have to decide what type camera would fill your needs. Vacation pictures and family album shots require only a point and shoot camera that fits in your pocket. Two hundred dollars will buy a decent camera that will take great pictures if you don't demand too much of it. Like wall sized photographs or digital art images.

If you like taking beautiful pictures and enjoy seeing them enlarged for the wall, then a DSLR or a prosumer EVF camera is needed. Professional photographers prefer the top of the line DSLRs that cost thousands of dollars but repay them many times over by doing their job. The two thousand dollar versions are quite bulky and heavy for the amateur photographer to lug around all day. An alternative is the micro four thirds EVF (Electronic View Finder) type. Weighing half of a DSLR, these cameras are nearly as good in picture quality as their larger cousins.

A point made by DSLR owners is that their prime lenses often sport a faster lens opening, making them able to capture low light pictures more easily. Since the doubling of the ISO setting on your camera effectively doubles the size of the lens opening, very little is lost in the way of quality. A good EVF prosumer camera show little or no artifacts or loss of detail at 200 or 400 ISO.

A good example is the new wide to telephoto (28 - 280mm) zoom lens by Panasonic Lumix GH1. It's widest opening is only F4.0, half the opening size of a F2.8 prime lens. But by raising the native ISO from 100 to 200 you are effectively can capture the same low light photo as the prime lens at the same shutter speed. As for the smoothing and blurring of backgrounds when using telephoto lens settings, it is true that the larger openings of prime lenses does this nicely. But the gaussian filter effect available in most image editors simulate this effect quite well.

If the minute appearance of artifacts concern you, there are many artifact removing software on the market. At the highest ranges of ISO (1600 - 3200) you can expect some loss of detail as well. However, the top of the line EVF cameras include sophisticated software that does a great job in retaining most of the lens detail at these lofty ISO settings.

Other characteristics that affect picture quality are distortion, trueness of color rendition, and cropping ability. All zoom lenses show some barrel distortion at the wide end and to a lesser extent, some pincushion effect at the telescopic end. The pincushion effect need not concern you too much because the usual subject material seldom includes straight lines that could make the distortion obvious to the eye. On the other hand, even a small amount of barrel distortion can be easily seen in architectural photos. There are some cameras that digitally correct for some if not all of this defect. If not, there are software programs that can correct for barrel distortion without affecting the quality of the image. One such is RadCor, a software that corrects for any distortion from specific makes of lenses and cameras.

While it is true that RAW images can produce extremely sharp images, most of us rely on the convenience of JPEGs. For this reason it would be well for you to pay attention to the type of engine used to convert the camera images to JPEGs (fine or regular). The latest in converter engines is the Venus Engine with dual CPUs used by the Panasonic Lumix GH1.This latter is affected by the number of pixels you have to work with, more being better. Of course, there is such a thing as too many pixels, having you end up with extra large image files that require a huge memory capacity fin your computer. The bottom line when choosing a digital camera is to examine the test photos and use the comparisons with other cameras to help make up your mind. There is no substitute for quality.

astronomical telescope advice plz!?

I got a star 70060 starter astronomical telescope from telescopeplanet.co.uk for christmas and i need some advice on how to get the best results from it, it's a
60mm Refractor Telescope with
3 Eyepieces (SR4mm, H12.5mm, H20mm, 1.5X erecting eyepiece & 3x barlow Lens)

Your scope will ideally support a maximum magnification of around 120x; that would depend on the quality of the optic and the prevailing conditions.

We should begin by losing your barlow lens and your erecting eyepiece. They are useless and the quality on these (provided with cheap starter scopes) is usually so low that they would be useless on any scope, of any size.

Then you should adjust your finder scope so that it is aligned with your main scope. Just aim the main scope at some conspicuous target (like a sign or tower in the distance, and adjust the finder until it points at exactly the same spot. You have a very poor excuse for a finder; but, if you align it correctly you should be able to get some help from it. The finder serves as a wide angle targeting device; the idea is to get it close enough so that you can see the object in the main tube.

Once you get that done, insert your diagonal into the focuser, and then your 20mm eyepiece. This should yield around 35x which is plenty to make out the brighter planets. Also, be aware that objects which are higher up in the sky will look much clearer then those near the horizon; you have to cut through more atmosphere when looking at the lower angle.

Today, both Jupiter and Mercury were very low on the Western Horizon at dusk; the season for Jupiter has passed and we will not be seeing much of it again until again until late spring. Mercury is Always an elusive target; it is never more then 15 degrees or so from the Sun. So, unless you have installed a full aperture solar filter, you are limited to catching periodic glimpses of Mercury at dusk or dawn.

Venus was that very bright star like object that you saw near the Moon, it will be back again tommorow, so you will have another chance to look at it. At 35x you should be able to make out what looks like a tiny version of our Moon during first quarter. If you look closely, both mercury and Venus go through phases.

Saturn comes up from the due east at around midnight. The ring alignment right now is at a right angle to us so they are edge-on to us. At 35x you should be able to see a small sphere with a line through it; if not, switch to the 12.5mm eyepiece and try it again at 56x. If the conditions are right you will see Satirn's giant moon Titan as a small point of light out beyond the end of the rings.

As you wait for Saturn to climb to a good position, you can turn your scope toward Orion. The Nebula is bright enough to be seen as a dim grey cloud with a 60mm; you should also be able to make out Trapesium, the four bright stars that sit as a tight little square right in the middle of the nebula.

The development of building a telescope was greatly aided by the construction of the achromatic lens.

The Achromatic Refractor

In 1733, the achromatic lens was invented by Chester Moore Hall, an English barrister. This was accomplished by combining a convex crown and a concave flint lens in such a way that their focal lengths were inversely proportional to their dispersions.

Although a number of telescopes were made according to Hall's instructions, the benefits of the achromatic lens do not appear to have been made available to the public until John Dollond invented it independently in 1758, and patented it. Dollond's efforts led to a demand for clearer glasses of more varied densities and of less equal dispersions, needed to improve achromatism, and chemists pursued experiments in learning how to control the refractive indices of melts, and in the pouring of large disks of limpid, homogeneous glass.

Altogether, excellent progress began to be made, and by 1800 achromatic objectives 6" in diameter were being turned out. Some of the best glass had been manufactured by Guinand, a Swiss who worked with Fraunhofer from 1805 to 1814. Fraunhofer produced a number of splendid achromats up to 9" in diameter.

Dollond was making refractors (spyglasses) with single-lens objectives as early as 1742, his price for a 2-foot telescope then being 7s 6d. In comparison, in 1762 he sold a 2-foot telescope with a two-lens objective (achromat) for 2 guineas. The lens diameters in each case were just under 2".

In 1783, with a view to combining the benefits of the wide field of Huygens' eyepiece with a means of making micrometric measurements of an image in the focal plane, Jesse Ramsden, an English optician, designed the compound eyepiece. Building a telescope was becoming more like the process undertaken today.It can be seen that a measuring device, such as adjustable parallel wires, set in the focal plane would be magnified along with the image. Measurement of an image in the focal plane was by no means a new idea; probably this had been first accomplished by Gascoigne, an Englishman, about 1638.

With the advent of the achromatic lens, the erecting or terrestrial eyepiece assumed considerable importance. This type of eyepiece was first suggested and used by Kepler, and improved in design about 1645 by Antonios Maria v. Schyrle, a Capuchin monk better known as Rheita. It is mentioned here because it spelled the rise of the refractor and the decline of the Gregorian for terrestrial use

In the early part of the 19th century, small achromatic refractors were being manufactured by several concerns. For those not having the means to buy achromats, telescopes with single-lens objectives continued to be made. Enterprising opticians were also offering lens sets that could be assembled into simple refractors.

The Modern Era

The method of chemically depositing silver on glass discovered about 1840 by Justus von Liebig, of Nuremberg, was successfully applied to a small glass telescope mirror in 1856 by Karl Steinheil, a German physicist, and independently in the following year by Jean Foucault, the famous French physicist.

Various processes of plating glass with metal for the making of mirrors had been known and practiced for centuries, but for one reason or another, the coatings were unsuited for front-surface reflection.

Then, in 1858, Foucault announced the development of his amazingly delicate and simple test for a concave reflecting surface, using an illuminated pinhole and a straightedge placed in the vicinity of the center of curvature of the mirror. The pinhole and straightedge were the outgrowth of earlier experiments in which simultaneous microscopic comparison was made of a pin point, likewise placed at the center of curvature of a mirror, and its reflected image, which was caused to fall alongside.

The last speculum of note to be constructed was one four feet in diameter, made by Grubb in 1870 for the Melbourne Observatory. Silver-on-glass mirrors replaced the more expensive and difficult-to-work speculum. It tarnished, but not nearly so quickly as speculum, and it could be removed by chemical means and a new coating applied without upsetting the figure of the glass surface.

Building a telescope was becoming closer to being constructed in the style we know it today.

Would you recommend the SkyWatcher Skymax-127 Telescope?

I would be using it for viewing the planets and deep space.
Here are the specs:
Magnifications (with eyepieces supplied):x60 & x150

Not necessarily as a first scope though you could do alot worse.

The problems with Maksutov telescopes are, among other things a slow cool down time. While they are praised for their sharp planetary views (for their size, though still not as good as an apochromat refractor of the same size though Maks are a lot cheaper), you would have to let the scope sit outside for 1-2 hours before the optics cooled down to the ambient temperature before you were able to get the optimum view. And if you didn't choose a night with steady seeing (calm air, no turbulence) you might still be disappointed with the view --- though bad seeing will affect all telescopes.

Another issue, is the limited field of view even with the longest focal length eyepieces, due to the long focal length of the telescope itself. If you were trying to use low power to find an object the limited field of view would make it harder to find things, though if you have working GOTO that helps. It still won't frame well large extended objects like the Double Cluster or the Andromeda galaxy, though there are focal reducers (which are like a reverse Barlow lens) available.

You will also need to get a dew shield and/or dew heater for the front of the telescope. Otherwise your viewing session will be over almost as soon as it has begun. And DO NOT WIPE the lenses when they are covered in dew. Allow them to air-dry or use a hair dryer after you bring the scope back inside.

Again, this is a decent telescope, but not an ideal first telescope. And some folks are more enamored with the Maksutov design than others.

For the newcomer to stargazing or indeed planet gazing, a good pair of binoculars are a major step up from scanning the skies with the unaided eye.

You will be able to develop your astronomical ability by looking at stars, viewing planets and locating constellations before going to the relative expense of purchasing a telescope.

There are many benefits to using binoculars for stargazing.

* The cost, good binoculars can be a lot less expensive than a telescope

* They are much easier to handle and use for a less experienced skywatcher. They are smaller, lighter and don't require any setting up.

* Binoculars provide a much larger field of view than the vast majority of telescopes. This makes finding objects easier. This is one of the biggest challenges faced by the beginner.

* Locating constellations, and observing comets is much easier with binoculars, as you can scan a lot of the sky quickly.

* Binoculars have lots of other uses and so you will get value from your purchase.

As well as your binoculars you will also need an astronomy sky chart to help you find your way around the skies.

A red flashlight is also handy. This allows you to look at your charts or any books you may have with out ruining your night vision. If you can't purchase a red torch, just cover a normal white light torch with red cellophane.

If you have developed your sky watching skills with your unaided eyes, you will find it a lot easier to pick things out using binoculars. Planet gazing will be within reach with binoculars too.

A visit to your local library will be very beneficial. Try to find a book that will show what a certain planet or object will look through binoculars.

Also remember that when going out on a clear night for a spot of sky watching that the temperature can soon drop. So always wrap up warm.

If you have decided to use a large pair of binoculars, you may find a tripod with a binocular mount a great help.

It isn't much fun finding a planet or constellation and then having the views ruined by your trembling hands.

A notebook is another good thing to carry. You can the write down and make notes about the things you have seen.

As with all things, the internet is absolutely fantastic for finding information about astronomy, and a quick Google will yield enough results and reading material to feed your hungry brain for a long time.

But even if your interest in astronomy only runs to learning the names of the stars in the sky,

a nice, small and compact pair of binoculars make stargazing and planet viewing more interesting.

White Sphere on Ford Island, HI?

Does anyone know what that huge white sphere is located on/off of Ford Island, in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii? Is it a radar or telescope? I can't find any information about it! I'm just curious to know what it is??

It's probably a radar dome. I got tired of looking for the one at Ford Island and decided to look for pics of what I thought it was instead.

Today you will learn how to create an extra long curtain rod using 3/4" standard curtain rods or 2.5" & 4.5" Dauphine wide-pocket rods.

On occasion, a window application may require a curtain rod of a longer length than is offered as a stock item or even as a special order item in stores. The basic 3/4" curtain rod is available in a straight 12 foot length.

Simply attach the short return pieces to the end and the job is done. However, this may be cost prohibitive since anything over 8 foot in length must be shipped by motor freight. This will cost a minimum of $125 just for the freight. In addition, a packaging fee will be added since the rods will require additional packaging to keep them from getting bent in transit. This is not a very cost effective method unless several windows are involved distributing the cost out per rod The remedy is quite simple requiring a little bit of work and a few items to complete (duct tape, hacksaw, pliers, file). The following outlines a solution I have used more than a few times.

Purchasing the Supplies

The basic 3/4" standard curtain rod 2½ or 4½" wide-pocket curtain rod can be extended beyond the longest offered sizes of 120" to 156". First, buy the longest rod available making sure to select the return projection needed. The return is the distance that the rod projects out from the wall. Several different projections are available on the 3/4" rod: 1½", 2½", 3½" and 5½". On the wider flat 2½" and 4½" Dauphine rods the return projection should not be a problem as these rods include adjustable brackets allowing the return depth to be set as necessary. Second, after determining the longest rod available for the application, calculate how much more extra rod length needed and purchase ANOTHER curtain rod several feet or more longer than the length needed. A curtain rod extender is another option allowing extensions in lengths of 24" each.

Completing the Project

For the 3/4" Standard Curtain Rod

When all the supplies and rods are ready, begin by cutting off the return end of the extra rod with a hacksaw. After cutting the 3/4" rod it may require filing to smooth any rough edges to help it slide into the adjoining rod and prevent your curtain fabric from snagging. Pliers may be needed to make one end larger or smaller to accommodate the adjoining rod Next, insert the cut piece into the main rod using as much length as possible. This will improve the strength of the rod and help prevent it from sagging. Before sliding the rod into the curtain or valance rod pocket, lay the rod on the floor, measure the exact length needed and secure the rod with Duct Tape so it does not telescope together when threading the curtain rod pocket. If the curtain rod may show, consider using white Duct Tape which is available in most large retailers.

For the Dauphine or Wide-Pocket Rods

Snap off the return bracket on both ends of the extra rod Pliers may be needed to make one end larger or smaller to accommodate the adjoining rod Before sliding the rod into the curtain or valance rod pocket, lay the rod on the floor, measure the exact length needed and secure the rod with duct tape so it does not telescope together when threading the curtain rod pocket. Another option is to use several very short sheet metal screws to hold the rods together.

When installing remember to use additional center support brackets to hold the longer rod securely in place and to prevent it from bending. Make sure to have a helper to hang the rod since it is very easy to bend such a long and skinny rod especially with all the additional weight on it. While this method is great for curtain rods, it does not work for traverse/drapery rods. The duct tape or screws would get in the way and the slightest deflection in the rod will keep the carriers from sliding properly.

Buying a telescope is a daunting task for a newcomer. It all depends on your astronomy goals and careers. There is no perfect one which suits all observers in all conditions. You have to look for the features you want in your telescope and select the best one's according to your requirement.

Selecting the proper type

• The refractor type telescopes best suit for watching moon and major planets. Refractor telescopes are long & thin, and known for their sharp, detailed and contrasty images. They collect light through multi-element lenses. If you are just a starter then a small, quality achromatic refractor of 60 to 90 mm aperture would be a good one. The best thing about a refractor telescope is that they are inexpensive, portable and almost maintenance free. A refractor telescope is also useful when you will be mostly observing from city or the surrounding areas where the night skies are lightly polluted.
• Reflector telescopes are also known as Newtonian telescopes. They are good for planetary as well as deep-sky viewing. However Newtonian telescopes are more fragile and need more maintenance than others. These telescopes collect light with a curved, concave mirror and with the help of their large apertures, they show fine, highly-resolved images. The reflector scopes are not suitable for terrestrial viewing because they produce an upside-down image.
• Catadioptrics use both lenses and mirrors to collect and focus the incoming light. They are also called compound telescopes. Catadioptrics scopes are considered the most versatile telescopes and gives great all-around performance. They use a large aperture in very compact tubes. They show magnificent images of the moon, planets and faint deep-sky objects, when viewed in dark skies away from urban areas. These scopes are best suited for astrophotography. Compared to other two, these scopes have a wide range of accessories available. They can be entirely computer controlled.

Factors affecting the performance of a telescope

• Aperture: Telescopes collect light from distant objects and focus it to produce images. The light collecting capacity of a telescope is the most important feature. It is the aperture of scope (diameter of mirror or lens) that is responsible for gathering light. Larger the aperture, the more light gathered, the more you'll see.
• Telescope Mounts: There are three basic mounts for telescopes altazimuth, Dobsonian, or equatorial. Altazimuth is the simplest type of mount, providing up-down, left-right motions. It is mainly recommended for terrestrial viewing and casual stargazing. The Dobsonian mount was basically designed for easy maneuvering of large reflectors of more than six inches. It is a boxy altaz-type mount sitting close to the ground. Equatorial mounts are designed for the purpose of astronomical viewing. These mounts are more expensive and complicated than the altazimuth mounts. With the help of these type of mounts users can track or follow the motion of celestial objects through the sky with a single manual hand control.
• Magnification: Magnification should never top the priority for buying a telescope. The quality if image degrades with magnification. Practically 300X is maximum magnification for good quality images. Telescope's magnification is also known as its power and it is adjusted by changing eyepieces. Ideally there should have been three eyepieces for the magnification of a scope: one low, one medium and one high. Lower powers of 30 - 50X are recommended for observing galaxies, star clusters and nebulae as they are spread over a wide area of sky. For observing the rings of Saturn, Jupiter, studying craters and valleys of the Moon's surface medium power of 80 - 100X are advised. Higher powers of 150 - 200X allow the astronomers to observe mountain peaks and fine lunar detail, the surface features of Mars.

Choosing binoculars for astronomy?

i have considered zoom binoculars, big ones, small and different types of prisms. My budget is $273 for buying a pair of binoculars. I am looking for a pair that would maximize versatility according to the atmospheric conditions. So i thought about zoom binoculars to deal with that. BUT my old astronomy teacher said something like the image will be blurring beyond a magnification. i also looked at binoculars that have the stabilization thing in them but they rack up in prize like intelliscopes or goto telescopes do. I want a pair of binoculars that can be carried easily without a tripod too but can view a lot of the sky and messier objects. Sort of like a small telescope that can go anywhere. But i want it to maximize the aperchure while being low in cost. What i am trying to say is i want a pair of binoculars that are good alround for astronomy.

Zooms are terrible and Binoculars don't work much for astronomy

Get a small telescope instead.

$273 will buy you a nice scope

Otherwise just get a $100 pair of Bushnell or something.

So you've been bitten by the astronomy bug and want to get started with your very own telescope, but you're confused by the vast number of possible purchases? You are not alone, astronomy stores are accustomed to dealing with the confused beginner though of course not everybody has the opportunity to visit a specialist store. This article is intended to help cut through some of the confusion.

There are several factors to be considered from practical considerations like size, weight and portability to the price you can afford and indeed where you'll be doing the majority of your observing. Ignoring more advanced uses like astrophotography we might think along the following lines.

As a general rule, the larger the aperture the more you can expect out of your telescope. Refractors will generally outperform similar size reflectors. Refractors however are more expensive than reflectors, due to the extra high quality glass involved. They can also be impractical to handle at larger apertures where they can also reach very long tube lengths.

Large aperture reflectors can have comparatively short tubes and be very easy to handle as well as inexpensive. There is a little extra maintenance involved as you may need to clean and align the mirror from time to time, this procedure is known as collimation.

Catadioptric telescopes are a combination of refractor and reflector and are quite portable even at large apertures. A great many amateur astronomers who have access to good dark sky sites, ultimately end up with catadioptric telescopes because the offer a range of possibilities including astrophotography. The large ones, like most large aperture scopes, are not ideal in light polluted areas like the city and suburbs.

Those big Dobsonian telescopes are really just big reflectors mounted on simple turntables and their attraction is their huge light capture and simplicity of use, making them ideal for visual astronomy in a good location (again they are not so good in light polluted areas).

If you do not relish the thought of learning to find your way around the skies you could consider purchasing one of the models that come with a computerized mount. These 'Go-To' telescopes have made finding targets a breeze.

With those facts in mind you can now think about where you are going to do the most observing and choose a suitable beginners telescope. If you live in the city and are unlikely to get to a rural location for observing then perhaps stick with the small to medium size refractors, reflectors or catadioptrics, with or without the go-to function, your budget will probably start to dictate the choices here! If on the other hand you live in a dark sky area then my recommendation is to buy a great big Dobsonian. These offer so much viewing pleasure and are so simple to use it is difficult to fault them.

What is a good telescope for under $500?

Someone close to me has offered to get me something nice and I have always wanted a telescope.

visit local astronomers and/or a telescope store and have a look. this is a very personal choice, and you need a telescope that's right for you. telescopes are amazing value and you can get a lot of scope for that much money.

you need to do some research: telescopes don't have tripods. they have mounts. the xt8 uses a dobsonian mount, which is excellent for visual observation. once you have done your research you will know why. my biggest scope is an 18" reflector on a dobsonian mount. i use a stepladder to reach the eyepiece when it's pointing high in the sky and carry it around in my van. it's really cool.

you can look at the moon, the planets and brighter star clusters and nebulae from anywhere. save the deep sky stuff for times you can get out to the country. very few people live under really dark skies. i certainly don't.

budget for some star charts so you can find your way around.

Again experts in using telescopes would suggest you to purchase a smaller scope because the smaller your scope, the more often you can make use of.

Look out for a good mount as it as important as the telescope itself because cheap mountings can wobble your focus a lot and make your focusing absolutely impossible. With the help of steady, rock -solid mounting your focusing will be much more precise. Add to that a stable tripod that will make your viewing a pleasure. Just follow these simple tips before you go on to buy a telescope and if required you can also consult with an expert astronomer who can provide you comprehensive knowledge on scopes.

What else do I need with my telescope ?

I just purchased this Dobsonian Telescope here

They, unfortunately, don't say what eyepieces it comes with. I'd guess a 10 mm and a 25 mm Sirius Plossl. That gives you 120x and 48x respectively. This is a highly usable scope as it is. I'd go out and start using it.

If you want to look at the Moon or Venus, a variable polarizing filter might be handy.

An oxygen 3 filter will get you nebulae even from city centers. This unit doesn't have a computer to help you find things, and it will be difficult to find nebulae from city centers without one.

You won't be able to see many galaxies from high light pollution sites. There's nothing for it. You have to go to a dark sky site.

I'd eventually add a 2x barlow. Then i'd consider getting a 2" wide angle eyepiece, perhaps a 38 mm Q70. You may need a coma corrector with that - the TeleVue Paracorr or the Baader. But you're in no hurry to get these things.

You might want a white light solar filter. But we're at solar minimum now, and there's not much to see. You could hold off for a year without missing much. In fact, when the Sun is this blank, i can't tell if i'm in focus.

You might want a padded case or box. I kept bashing my focuser.

The skymaps site can get you going. There's a chart, and a list of objects each month. The objects are listed from easy to hard. Start with the easy stuff. Start with your lowest power eyepiece - it has the biggest number on it, like 25 mm. Get comfortable with how the image moves when you move your scope and look through your finder.
