When Galileo made his telescope, he was far from the expert he became later. He was just a layman, who found the sky and its stars fascinating and wanted a device that would take him closer to the object of his fascination. It was this desire that led him o devise the first ever telescope that changed the face of history in more ways than we can imagine.

Â

In today’s age, a person is able to buy a telescope, readymade, from the market. But for one who is not experienced, constructing a telescope is akin to an adventure. Although the procedure is complex and technical, and quite long, it is quite possible to make a telescope for oneself, by oneself. For the amateur who holds a keen interest in the telescope and the way it works, constructing it by oneself can be quite adventurous and fulfilling.

Â

The construction itself is not very difficult, and it is made easier if one can enlist the assistance of another person who has himself constructed telescopes earlier. Even someone who is an amateur astronomer would make a good mentor, if it’s no possible to find one experience in telescope construction. Astronomy clubs generally have at least one member who has prior experience of building telescopes, and such people are quite accommodating towards amateurs.

Â

For an amateur, telescope construction can be a cumbersome task. Patience and calm are advisable for a first-timer. The greatest inventions of all time came from blind experiments and unexpected results. When starting out, it is always best to have some references and manuals handy, as they can explain the technical aspects in the clearest ways. A local library is a good source for material to an amateur just starting out in telescope building.

Â

The basic elements of a telescope are the mirror, two lenses, the housing for the whole structure, and materials that will be used for polishing the mirror. These parts can all be bought at local stores or even online. The mirror can be ground at home as well, but is a tiresome process.

Â

The construction of a telescope is a long and drawn out process. Careful planning is required to ensure that there is minimal cleaning up left after all the work is completed. Is advisable to lay out newspapers to ensure clean work as well as to ensure correct placement of all the equipment. Maintain a logbook if possible to keep track of the task completed and the duration of each task. In later stages, the logbook is a good record to refer to understand the tasks completed and how long each task required. Also, it helps one to remember what work has been completed and what remains.

Â

Once the construction is complete, it is quite natural for the amateur to be pleased with himself for the work he has accomplished. It is however, easier to buy a telescope kit from the market instead of purchasing individual component and constructing the whole structure. Assembling a telescope from a kit is easier, takes less time and is a better financial option. Such telescope kits are intended for the amateurs, and not directed at the professionals.

There are telescopes of several brands that are freely available in the market. However, even for one who wants to construct his telescope at home, there are several viable options.

One way to go about constructing a telescope is to buy each individual component and then assemble the whole structure. The required elements are mirrors, concave and convex lenses, the housing structure, brackets, and some other components. These can all be bought at local shops or in online stores. A comprehensive list of required elements can be downloaded from websites that serve as guides for amateurs looking to build their own telescopes. Books dedicated to this subject are available.

An enthusiast may also want to construct each element by hand at home, though that is an extremely time-consuming process and not the usual home method. It is a cumbersome process to create the housing compartment and arranging each element inside it. If one wants to follow this method, then one must be prepared to face several hurdles in the construction process.

Another method is to make use of telescope kits, which are available in the markets. These kits contain all the required elements and include instruction manuals to guide amateurs working at home. Using kit elements and assembling the instrument is considered a better method than constructing a telescope from individual elements bought separately. Telescope kits are cheaper and far less time-consuming than other methods of telescope construction. They save time spent on searching for each required component. Step-by-step instructions make it possible to work faster, making fewer mistakes along the way. These kits are intended for amateurs, and first-timers not yet experienced in making telescopes. A professional astronomer or one who aims to become a professional may however choose to work from scratch.

The point of consideration now is whether homemade telescopes are better than readymade instruments available otherwise. The simple answer to such a question is that both are almost the same with respect to quality. A homemade instrument displays the same characteristics as a readymade one of the same specification. A telescope made at home will have the same magnification factor, and is simpler to use in comparison to one bought in a shop. In fact, it is not complex at all and is similar to the ones built by early astronomers like Galileo.

The construction of telescopes at home, in truth, is often a joy, and a hobby that many enjoy. Several people consider it akin to an art, and have dedicated themselves to creating perfect instruments at home. Several sites online are a medium for proud astronomers to display their homemade telescopes. There are also web pages in existence that are dedicated guides for amateurs who want to create their own telescopes. Such pages give comprehensive lists of the elements required for its construction as well.

As with any other task, exhaustive research is required before setting out to make a telescope. It is imperative that the builder understands how each element performs individually and how it affects the whole. It also advisable to have storage space for the material required in construction of a telescope. However, despite all the effort that goes into construction of a homemade instrument, the results are reward enough.

Constructing a telescope by oneself is not too difficult if the levels of enthusiasm for the task are just right. Of course, the whole idea also hinges on the type of telescope one has the intention of creating. If it is a simple device that one wants, something that is the simplest form of a telescopic instrument, then it is an easy task. However, for an instrument that is capable of allowing the user to explore the skies, then considerable more effort and investment will be required.

Right at the outset, it is imperative to understand the fundamental requirements of telescope construction. Whether the user wants to create a refractor or reflector type telescope, that is also something that must be made clear at the beginning. Although both serve the same purpose, the method for construction of each is rather different.

There are many online reference sites that provide guides for the construction of telescopes at home. Several of these sites, in addition to the instructions, also provide detailed lists of the essential elements of construction. Several authors have also written about telescope construction, and the neighborhood library is a good place to start reading such books from their DIY sections.

The materials for building telescopes can be bought at a variety of stores. Hobby centers are a must-visit for this purpose. The attendants in these stores know and understand the needs of such tasks and can help you like no other. Online stores also supply the bare essentials of a telescope. Some online stores are:

1. www.photonics.com

2. www.universityoptics.com

3. www.atscope.com

4. www.telescope.com

Most of the building blocks of a telescope can also be handmade. PVC pipes, wood and cardboard raw materials, and duct tape can go a long way in the construction process and still result in operational telescopes. Some instruments made with crude materials such as these can also look professional and work just as well.

The toughest part of constructing telescopes on your own is not the building bit, but the research part. It is useful to complete your homework before setting out on such a daunting task. The whole construction process is not a breeze and involves quite a bit of efficient hard work. It is often advised to maintain an activity log while working on such a project, so that one can have a clear idea of where one is going during the long task of construction.

For all the hard work involved, the construction itself is not all that difficult. All it requires is that one study the task at hand diligently before starting out in all confidence. Knowing and understanding how each individual component of the telescope performs makes the whole process quite simple. An amateur can succeed with his first construction attempt if he has been meticulous in his preparation. An alternative to putting in such hard work in understanding the method is to take the easier way out and avail of the simplicity of a telescope kit. Teachers use such kits to demonstrate the construction of a simple telescope. You can use the same kit for making your first telescope as well. These kits are a perfect beginners’ tool because they are a better financial option and also much less time consuming while at the same time allowing the construction of moderately powerful telescopes.

For the budding stargazer, the most important instrument in his inventory should be a telescope. Once this debate is resolved, the next question is where to source this all important instrument from. You can work from scratch, buy all the raw material required, and build your own telescope, or you can take the easier and more practical way out and buy yourself a telescope kit which contains every last thing you will need to make you telescope and then just assemble the supplies together. It is the telescope kit that is the recommended option for a beginner. Ideally, only professional should attempt to build a telescope out of practically nothing. Telescope kits not only come with everything you need to build a good telescope, they also contain a descriptive instruction manual that will lead you through each step of the telescope construction process.

The commonly available kits have the elements and the guides for making a Dobsonian telescope. This telescope uses a secondary mirror in addition to a primary mirror. The other optical constituents of this telescope are a finder scope, an eye piece, a focuser, and the mirror support system. The housing compartment for all these elements is not included as part of the kit.

Using such kits to construct your own telescope is graced with numerous advantages. Most of these advantageous highlights are meant for beginners, who can save both time and money with this option. A complete kit allows the builder to save the time that would otherwise be spent searching high and low for the correct components. The average price of a telescope kit is $200 to $300. They can be purchased at hobby centers everywhere, and if you find a discount, the better bargains you will get.

For teachers who need a demonstration to incite the interest of youngsters and get them hooked onto an interesting hobby such as this, telescope kits are a good teaching aid. It is possible to use such a kit for classes in school and demonstrate the whole process to the students. There is no age restriction for this ho9bby, making it a good hobby for anyone interested in it.

Telescope kits generally are aimed at beginners, amateurs just starting out on their telescope love affair, or at students of the astronomy who intend to pursue a profession in the field someday. To build a telescope using such a kit, you do not need a degree in astronomy or even the experience of an expert. Absolutely any novice is capable of constructing a decent instrument with the instructions given. Manuals that come with the kits, are step-by-step guides, and even have diagrams that explain the methods detailed. Affordably price, and attractively marketed, these kits can pack a pretty powerful telescope and are a lure for any beginner.

It takes only 2-3 days to have an operational, fully functional telescope in your hands after you get your kit. The total work-hours required for it are hardly 15 or 20 from your time. You can work for an hour a day or work a marathon stretch over two days to complete your project. A lazy weekend is the best time to get started. There is never the complication that arises from missing a crucial element during purchase, because these kits always have everything. If you find something damaged, you can have it replaced at the store you bought the kit from. However, it is best to run through the content of the kit and check for quality at the time you make the purchase.

If you are a beginner, do not think too much about basic construction from sourced raw material. If you are a professional, however, you have the options open to you.

Having a wide variety of SLR camera lenses is a necessity for a professional photographer. However, choosing a second lens for amateur photographers can be daunting. The sheer number of SLR camera lenses available on the market is amazing. Discover the differences in camera lenses and make sure you buy the best camera lens for you.

The most important point to remember about SLR camera lenses is that they are always camera brand specific. For instance, a Nikon camera lens would not be compatible with a Canon camera and vice versa. However, a lot SLR camera lenses are interchangeable between different models of the same brand. For instance, the 18-135mm kit lens that comes with the Nikon D80 will work on the D90.

Whichever camera you own, the lenses available vary considerably in purpose, size and price and can generally be easily placed into one of the following five categories.

Standard

Most SLR cameras that come with a kit lens will feature a standard lens. It's designed to take a wide variety of photographs. Their perspective is similar to what the human eye sees. It often has too narrow a field of view for use with interiors and is not selective enough for longer-range views.

Wide Angle

With a shorter focal length than a standard SLR camera lens, wide angle lenses provide a wider angle image. Offering somewhat of a distortion on the picture's perspective, wide angle camera lenses give the effect that the item which is closest to the camera is a lot bigger than it is, producing a surreal looking photograph. An extreme example of a wide angle lens is a fish-eye lens.

Fish Eye

Often seen as an extension or progression to a wide angle lens, using a fish eye lens can encompass a wider view, but give the photograph a different perspective. Not used particularly widely in general photography, fish eye lenses offer a great and unusual effect to produce some fantastic images.

Telephoto

In essence, a camera with a telephoto lens attached has the ability to bring items that are further away closer to the camera. It works the same way that a telescope or pair or binoculars work. One of the SLR camera lenses that vary in price most, they can cost in excess of $100,000 at the higher end of the market. But amateurs can find them below $1,000. They are especially adept at wildlife and sports photography.

Macro

The opposite of a telephoto lens, a macro SLR lens has the ability to make small things that are close, appear extremely large. Not detracting from the detail in the image, high quality macro lenses are capable of taking a photograph of a one inch sized insect with such detail, that it can be blown up to fit a large poster without losing any of the insect's features.

So now you're familiar with the different types of lenses. It should be clear to you, what your next lens will be. Click here to find out more about SLR camera lenses.

Why let your kids drain their brains on another game console when you get them something that's fun and will help them learn at the same time? Science toys have grown up a lot since we were kids. Today's telescopes automatically locate planets and stars, ant farms use NASA technology, and new science experiments kits let your kids become budding forensics experts. Here's a guide to the most popular science toys for kids.

Choosing the Best Telescope for Kids

One of the best science toys parents can share with their kids is a telescope. The first time your child beholds the wonders of the heavens is a magical moment, one they will never forget. And wouldn't you rather have your kid camped out all night in the backyard stargazing instead of cracking his thumbs on some mindless video game?=

Here are a few tips for buying a home telescope. Many parents focus on power, or magnification, when trying to figure out what type of telescope to buy for their child. In fact, the aperture, or diameter of the telescope is what determines how much you can see with a telescope. So to get the best telescope for kids, get the widest aperture you can instead of the strongest power.

A stable telescope mount is also important. There's nothing more frustrating than wrestling with a wobbly tripod when your trying to focus on the rings of Saturn. One of the best telescope for kids is the Celestron 21061 AstroMaster 70 AZ Refractor Telescope. Not only does it have a rigid, stable platform, it also comes with software with over 10,000 celestrial objects and images to help your child search the heavens night after night.

New Natural Science Toys

Natural science toys have changed a lot since the cloudy plastic bottles filled with Sea Monkeys we grew up with. Even the classic ant farm has been upgraded. Borrowing NASA technology, the Fascinations Antworks Illuminated is a self-contained ant farm where ants burrow through a special food-grade gel they can also eat. Pretty gross, but pretty cool too.

Other natural science toys for kids include mini insect, frog and butterfly habitats and special collectors that let your little ones safely collect their creepy crawlies. Now your kids can observe the wonders of nature without you having to worry about finding toads in their pockets at laundry time.

The Classic Childrens Microscope

If the immense magic of the heavens dazzles your child, so too will the minute wonders of the microscopic world. The modern children's microscope is sturdy, safe and looks cool too. If you're hell-bent on finding low priced kids microscopes, you may want to consider a good microscope kit. Otherwise you'll be hunting down slides, specimen bottles, and all the other accessories your kid suddenly decides he needs.

One of the best kid's microscope kits is the Discovery Exclusive Macro Microscope. It comes with all the basic accessories such as slides, tweezers and specimen bottles along with a book of experiments and real specimens including cloth from a real 900-year old Peruvian mummy! Maybe that will stop your kid from asking you to save your hair and toenail clippings for them.

Easy Science Kits for Kids

Children's science kits used to be confined to nerdy adolescents trying to create explosions in their basement with a junior chemistry set. Today's easy science kits for kids are safer and more fun. Most science kits include bottles of simple chemicals and all the lab equipment (test tubes, safety goggles, tweezers, etc.) your junior scientist needs to perform hours of non-explosive experiments. Even more fun is the electronic Snap Circuits SC-300 kit. The kit comes with a clear and easy to understand color-coded instruction manual and 60 snap-together parts that let kids build over 300 exciting projects including an AM radio, burglar alarm, radio announcer and more.

Telescope Kit

Is there a telescope under $300 thats better than a 6" dob for viewing the moon and planets.?

A few months ago I got a 6" dob telescope. At first I thought I would use it more for viewing deep space but it turns out that I just mainly use it for viewing planets and the moon. I know where I can sell the telescope for $200 (just a little under what I paid for it). I plan to use that money plus another $100 for a new scope. So my question is, what would be the best telescope for viewing mainly just the planets and moon for around $300 or so?

I also bought a Celestron eyepiece kit for my dob which I would like to keep for my new scope so I'm hoping the new scope will be a Celestron.
Another reason I would like to sell this because of the the size. I would like something smaller.

No.

Why do you want to replace the scope? This is a good all-round performer, and you're not going to do much better without spending significant money.

Eyepieces are interchangeable, by the way. There are not tied to a particular manufacturer's telescopes.

Addendum: If physical size is an issue and wide-field views are not required, consider one of the excellent Maksutov telescopes that are popular nowadays. However, the telescope still needs a mount to support it, and good mounts are intrinsically bulky.

We often take for granted a part of our home that we pass by day in and day out. What part is that? It is your front porch. If you have a medium to large front porch, think of it as an extension of your home where you can spend time with your family. You might wonder what you could possibly do on your porch.

I found it easy to come up with a bunch of simple family activities that you could do on your porch with your son, daughter, spouse, mother, father, grandparent, neighbor or friend. Now, don't laugh when you read this list. Some activities will be more appealing to you than others. Some might even bring back memories of when you were a kid.

Here are the first 37 things that came to my mind, but I did not stop there. I have many more coming in my next few articles. Some of these activities will work best if you have a small table on your porch. Keep in mind that the weather and your porch lighting play a factor in some of these activities.

So let's get to it.

Play a game of checkers, chess, cards or any board game like scrabble or monopoly. All are fun front porch classics.

Read stories out loud to each other.

Listen to some mysteries on old-time radio when it's dark outside.

Write birthday cards for the month ahead.

Work on a puzzle book together.

Read the newspaper with your honey.

Listen to an audio book together, maybe a chapter at a time.

Plant an herb garden to put on the ledge of your railing.

Make potholders from loops. Remember that as a kid?

Rock a baby on your porch rocker (you need a baby for this one!).

Learn a foreign language together.

Blow bubbles with a child. You can even make the bubble solution yourself.

Draw with sidewalk chalk.

Install a ceiling fan on your porch (great project for a knowledgeable parent to teach an older child).

Play jacks, tiddlywinks or marbles (these can be fun, really!).

Magic tricks

Play a keyboard or guitar and sing some songs.

Listen to hockey, basketball, baseball or football on your radio.

Do a homework assignment together.

Setup your telescope and identify stars, planets and UFO's .

Surf the internet, update your blog, answer questions in a forum.

Talk on the phone to your grandma or grandpa.

Spill your heart to each other on the porch swing.

Fold clothes. Folding clothes doesn't have to be boring!

Get a cool paint-by-number and get going on it.

Brainstorm ideas to fix up your porch to make it even nicer.

Hang up a porch swing with a friend.

Identify birds and keep a bird watching journal.

Put a jigsaw puzzle together. Do this on something that easily transports to the house.

Sort through and organize your recipes.

Clip coupons, articles or pictures from newspapers and magazines.

Make a stepping stone from a store-bought kit.. Some include colored, sparkly gems and letter stencils to personalize your stepping stone.

Build a wind chime and hang it on your porch.

Paint small decorative bird houses to decorate your porch.

Have a book club meeting on your porch - complete with some snacks like lemonade, refrigerator cookies and popcorn.

Get out your sketch pad and sketch a picture of your front porch to hang in your home.

Decorate your front door with a wreath, basket or some beautiful bright fresh paint.

Your porch is a perfect little piece of heaven that you just might be overlooking. It's a great place to spend time outdoors with someone you love or just by yourself. Even in this fancy, high tech world where we are constantly entertained by television, videos and game boxes, sometimes getting back to the basics is rather refreshing. Dream up your own reasons for spending time on your own front porch with your family. It just might improve the rest of your life, too.

Look for future articles from me with more fun activities to do on your front porch.
