Amazon shows this Celestron C70 as $50 off the regular price of $149, except that Celestron sells it for a list price of $99. I think that Amazon should be honest in it’s pricing.

This is a great little scope with one exception. I’ve used it with its supplied tripod (an adequate and usable tripod, and the slow-motion controls work well too). The scope is robust and works well, it took me a bit to figure out the “carry case” is actually meant to be a rain or dust cover for use in inclement conditions (the objective end unzips along with the opening right at the eyepiece), interesting though of little interest to me. The scope optics are REALLY GOOD! I was quite impressed (especially given the other reviews). The one aspect which falls short (and keeps it from getting a 5 star review) is the standard zoom eyepiece. The standard zoom eyepiece is mediocre at best. I’ve used it with the 1.25-inch converter, and my standard Plossl eyepieces from my good scope. Use decent eyepieces, and this is a GREAT little scope. To parents looking for that first scope for their kid I would heartily recommend this scope, provided they buy a standard eyepiece for it (25mm to 40mm would be ideal for deep sky views). The standard zoom eyepiece is dim and hazy, not recommended. But the C70 Mini Mak (that should have been MIGHTY Mak!) scope itself is a keeper!

Optics are “ok” at best (very marginal at 50x or 75x but not bad at 25x). On the positive side, the telescope is small (about the size of a thermos jug) and portable so I can take it with me whereas many telescopes are just too big or need too much tripod. Basically, at $94 for the telescope and tripod, I’m happy.

I bought this scope for all around use: shooting: to spot impacts on targets; general: terrestrial observation. Results: very good, at 25X I can clearly see .22 cal(5,56mm) diameter bullet impacts on paper at 25-30 meters distance. At 50X I can count bricks (8 X 3″) on the front of buildings 400 meters away. At 4 km you can clearly distinguish small (1 meter high) cacti from the rest of the vegetation.

I live in a hot area, so looking at far away scenery (3 km+) at 50X and higher gets you looking at heat waves, but this is not a defect of the scope. I also tried some lunar observation at 25X: crisp, clear images.

I had no slop on the focus wheel as other reviewers have had, and as for more info, I think “Black Thumb’s” review elsewhere is

detailed and objective.

For the cost, I find this scope pretty much unbeatable, if you use it within its limitations.
